Thunder takes 1st in Mom's Are Best iFA Tourney!

Spring softball has been an interesting experience this year. Early on we were mostly rained out more often than not. This weekend we'd planned to play in an ASA tourney which was to also be a benefit event for cancer but it got cancelled when more than half of the teams dropped out. We can ALWAYS count on Dennis Fong to come through with a tourney and this weekend was no exception. Dennis pulled three teams from the cancelled tourney and joined us up with three other teams for a one day event at Freedom Park.
Our day started a little flat in the first game and we didn't come alive until that last inning at the end of regulation play to show a spark of interest and put up two runs, losing 3-2 to Mizuno (our local rivals). After that game woke us up we rolled through the next three games over Foothill Gold teams to get into the championship game...again vs. Mizuno. Seemed a little like deja vu because one month ago at this same venue in a one day tourney we fought from a loss to Mizuno in pool play to make it into the championship game against this team.
This time Duane, Coach Robert and the girls were determined not to walk away "a bridesmaid", to use Robert's vocabulary. It was a hard fought game (so they tell me because I was in Half Moon Bay celebrating my good friend Victoria's 40th birthday at a surprise dinner her husband organized at the Ritz) and Thunder came up on top!

A few highlights via the text play-by-plays I got from team Mom's Amie & Lisa:
Lisa: 2-2 top of 3
Amie: We are beating their butts
Lisa: 6-5 them top of 6 - DARN!
Amie: We r down by 1
Lisa: Lissy screamed a double 2 score 2 runs. we WON!
Amie: we won!

Duane's highlights:
Melia got in the box in the last inning with one runner on base. She told me that if she got a strike she was going to mash it. The first pitch was a ball. Next pitch came and Melia mashed it up the middle off the pitcher's shin. It richoceted off into left field and one run scored. Next batter came up was Turtle (referred to above by Lisa as Lissy). There were two runners on base. Turtle smashed a double to the fence scoring two runs and we won the game!

Another highlight of this tourney for me was having two of our high school players back in action with us! Carly & Maddie were welcome additions back on the field with the Thunder! More returning over the next few weekends! Stay tuned!
